We make sure that after our highly-trained technician leaves, you have peace of mind for a long time.
The prevention of backflow in municipal water systems is incredibly important in every plumbing system from residential to industrial plumbing. Without proper backflow prevention, drinking water can become contaminated causing harm to the people and animals consuming and bathing in the water.
Improper backflow prevention in industrial settings could leak poisonous substances into the water, while residential or commercial plumbing could leak sewage or other toxic or harmful substances into the main water system. Both cases can, of course, be detrimental to the health of the community.
What Exactly is Backflow?
Backflow is the unwanted reversal of a flow. That flow can be of water or of any other undesirable substances (sewage, industrial gases, etc). If the flow reverses, the contaminated water or other substances will go backwards, into the potable water supply, contaminating the potable water. This contamination is typically caused by ‘cross-connections’.
For example, imagine one end of a hose is attached to your home (so, the main water supply). Now, imagine that the other end is resting in a bucket of herbicide for the garden. Guess what happens if there’s a large dip in the water supply? A dip will cause the water to be pulled back down into the main supply. So, if the hose is in the bucket and there’s no backflow prevention system, that’s a problem. The herbicide will be sucked backwards, into the clean water. Thus, the community will now be drinking herbicide in their next glass of water. If this happened just once at every water source, the drinking water would no longer be drinkable.
Unfortunately, a dip in the water supply is easy to come by. Something as complicated as a break in the water main can cause one. Even something as simple as using a fire hydrant can cause one. Because there are a lot of ways for a dip in the water supply to happen, it’s important for people to have backflow prevention systems in place.
